November Twilights and Rivers of Light

By Dave Shute

Disney World extended November Animal Kingdom operating hours by a bit in its latest schedule update.

As a result, the park is open between an hour to an hour and a half after civil twilight ends.

This provides plenty of scope for two showings of Rivers of Light, one at the end of civil twilight, and one an hour and a half later. Until November 5th, potential times could be 7 and 8.30p, and after daylight savings ends, 6 and 7.30p.

From an operational point of view, Rivers of Light has been ready to go for a couple of weeks now. Guesswork around when it will actually open seems to fall into 1) late October and 2) next year.  A third camp votes for in between. My money is on the third camp.

Here’s the chart of November 2016 Animal Kingdom closes (dashed red line), sunset (yellow line) and end of civil twilight (gray line):

(The blue line is the end of nautical twilight, and the black line the end of astronomical twilight. All this stuff is defined here, but the key point is that the end of civil twilight (the gray line) defines “dark enough.”)

Hello. My family of 4 (Mom, Dad, girl 12, girl 10) are going to Disney Sunday November 6th arrive in Orlando at 4:30pm.
Staying at WorldQuest resort until 5pm on the 12th. They do have transportation to and from parks but times seem to be sparse. We plan on using Uber.
I do not know where to begin. I do know I want to do Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and Animal kingdom. My husband and 12 y/o mentioned Universal and are dissing Hollywood Studios. I would like to see the fireworks but don’t need to be in the park every night. Not sure what days or parks to choose a park hopper.
Trying to streamline our visit so it is efficient and cost effective.
Not sure of her schedule, but our motivation for this trip was to visit with our babysitter who is currently interning at “Once Upon a Toy” & “Mickey’s Pantry” in Disney Springs(dwntwn Disney). She mentioned the possibility of 10% discount tickets. Do you have any of that info?
What days of the week are better for what parks?
any info you can provide would be appreciated!
thanks Jessica

Jessica, she may be able to get you cheaper tix, but the problem with that is that your need your tickets now so that you can book your FastPass+–see this for both suggestions on how many days to spend in each park and how to use FastPass+.

See this for an example of how to spend your time.

Those dates

11/6 avoid MK and HS
11/7 avoid AK
11/8 avoid Epcot
11/9 avoid MK
11/10 avoid Epcot
11/11 MK and HS
11/12 avoid AK and MK

If they’ve left closing until 730 pm nov 25 because they might offer rivers of light would they wait until last minute to announce reopening? The page still says no times?

Katy, I expect that the close is at 7.30 so they can offer the other new after dark stuff. See this. My point is that ROL could fit too… And the first ROL shows will likely not be announced…

Katy – Yes, Disney very well may announce a reopening at the last minute. Especially with the previous problems.
