To-Do List: Autumn-Winter-Spring Itinerary
TO-DO LIST: AUTUMN-WINTER-SPRING ITINERARY
(This To-Do List is for the Autumn-Winter-Spring itinerary. For To-Do-Lists for other itineraries, see this.)
A. MORE THAN 180 DAYS BEFORE YOUR PLANNED ARRIVAL DATE
(Note that a good travel agent, such as Destinations in Florida, can do almost all of this for you, for free.
If you use Destinations in Florida as your travel agent through a link for this site–like this one–then they share a bit of the pixie dust they get from Disney with me.)
1. Confirm your budget, planned dates, kids’ development paths and heights, and your transportation choice and its availability for your planned dates.
2. Make your plane reservations, if flying. Make any other needed transportation arrangements.
3. Set up your hotel and tickets. Call 407-939-7675 (preferred, because this allows you to tell the reservationist which building at your resort you wish to be in, which the new WDW website no longer allows you to do), or click here to use Disney’s online system. (Note: if your dates are later than what the online system permits, see this.)
- When the page opens, click “Book Vacation Packages”
- Add your dates, party size and age of your kids
- Set up your basic package:
- Click “Advanced Search”
- Click “I know the Resort I want.”
- In the drop down menu that appears, click to open, and scroll to pick your hotel
- Click “Dining Plan”
- Click “Continue”
- Wait
- Fix the options–a page will open that has selected several options for you, most of them wrong. You will need to fix in each section, and update the sections as you go.
- At the top of the page you will be put into the most expensive room. Click the button for the least expensive instead. (The views aren’t worth it for first time family visitors, except Animal Kingdom Lodge visitors should always pick a Savannah view)
- Click “Update” and wait
- Click, in the “Park Tickets and Options” section, the button in the upper right that says “Open.”
- Leave the “Park Hopper” box clicked, but unclick the “Water Parks and More” box
- Change the number of days in your tickets to 7
- Click “Update” and wait
- Click “Ground Transportation” and when it opens, click Disney’s Magical Express, and add your airline info
- Click “Continue” and wait
- Click “Select this Offer” at the bottom of the page and wait
- When the pricing pages shows up, unclick Trip Insurance (if offered)
- In the “Special Room Requests” section, click to open, then click “Refrigerator”
- If you are on the phone, tell the reservationist what room you want
- If a Polynesian guest, ask for a room on the third floor (quieter) in Rapa Nui or Tahiti. (These are 2 of the only 3 buildings with both the largest rooms and balconies on all floors, and are the 2 buildings closest to the Epcot monorail. You are in fact so close to TTC that you can take the express monorail home from the Magic Kingdom–much faster than the resort monorail.)
- If a Pop Century Guest, ask for a room on the 4th floor (quieter) in the 1970s area. (This is the only building group at Pop Century that does not surround a pool, so it will be quieter at night.)
- Complete the transaction with your credit card.
B. 181 DAYS BEFORE YOUR ARRIVAL DATE
Go to the online restaurant reservations page here, set up an account if you don’t already have one, and practice trying to reserve restaurants.
This may well drive you crazy, but the site works better than it used to…and is likely the only way you can get your Cindy reservations done! (as the site opens up a new reservable day at 6a, whereas the phone reservation line opens at 7a).
Collect your restaurant reservations together. You will want to do them online in order of hardest to reserve first. This is how they are listed below.
C. EXACTLY 6am EST, EXACTLY 180 DAYS BEFORE YOUR ARRIVAL DATE
(For an 180 day calendar, see this).
Be on the restaurant website here by at least 5:50am EST, and have your Cindy reservation all set up on the page. Keep refreshing, as you will be let in as soon as Disney’s system decides it is 6a.
Make as many of the following as you have patience for (try to get through at least Akershus), in the exact order listed:
- Cinderella’s Royal Table Lunch (dining plan, two credits): Wednesday at 11a or later if you can; earlier than 11 only if your sole option…
- Chef Mickey’s (cash): Thursday at 10:30a if you can; ok anytime 9a and later, but earlier times cut into sleeping-in time
- Hoop-Dee-Doo Revue (dining plan, two credits): Tuesday 6:15p show. (7.15p until October 1.) The other two times don’t work well
- Crystal Palace (Liberty Tree Tavern between 1/3/2010 and 2/14/2010) (dining plan): Second Saturday 5:30p if you can; earlier if you must, but this will cut into your pool/nap time; not later
- Akershus Banquet (dining plan): First Saturday 6:30p if you can, but no earlier than 4 hours after your flight arrival, no later than 7:30p
- Downtown Disney’s Rainforest Café (NOT the Rainforest café at the Animal Kingdom!!) (cash): Wednesday 8p if you can; no earlier, but later is ok
- San Angel Inn (dining plan): Friday 5:30. Earlier OK but cuts into your pool/nap time; no later than 7:15p
- 50’s Prime Time Café (dining plan): Monday 6:15p Not earlier than 5:30; can be later
- Whispering Canyon (cash): Tuesday 11a. Can be earlier, but cuts into sleeping-in time; no later than 11:15a
For those you don’t make online, make them by calling call (407) WDW-DINE (939-3463)
D. 180 DAYS BEFORE EACH OF YOUR CIRQUE AND HOUSE OF BLUES DATES
1. Order your Cirque du Soleil tickets (Category 2) for the 6p show on Wednesday at this site (cash).
2. Call the House of Blues Orlando at (407) 934-BLUE and order tickets for your second Sunday 10:30 Gospel Brunch (cash)
E. NOTES ON PACKING ETC. BEFORE YOU LEAVE
1. Check in online at the link you can find on this page
2. If you use Disney’s Magical Express, you do not need to collect your bags at the Orlando airport. Disney will get them for you and, eventually, deliver them directly to your room. Your bags may arrive hours after you do; so, depending on the weather forecasts, have a carry-on with an appropriate change of clothes for Orlando weather on Saturday, as you will almost certainly go to Epcot on Saturday before your checked bags arrive.
3. Follow the instructions in the Magical Express packet you will receive in the mail regarding both tagging your bags pre-departure, and where to go at the Orlando airport to find your transport to your resort.
4. Bring a copy of your room reservation, confirmation numbers (such as for the Gospel Brunch) and any tickets for special events you may have received in the mail.
5. Pack breakfast utensils, as they are not always available in the gift shop: bowls, spoons, napkins
6. When you arrive at the hotel, look for the special “On-line Check-in” line, and get into it.

I have a family of three. My husband, myself, and my nine year old son. I would like to go to disney from sept 27 til oct 1 2011. Is it to last min to plan this trip or deal wise do you think I will be ok if i book it soon? Also we want to go to magic kingdom, MGM, animal kingdom and would also like to go to Island of adv and universal. Is their any way we can do this with out spending and arm and a leg on ticket prices?
Hi Kris–I’d advise booking soon, and you will spend an arm and a leg on tickets! Unless you have military eligibilty (active duty, active reserve, or career retired) there’s no ticket dela going on now…
Hi!
My fiancé and I will be going to DW on either November 12 or 13 it’s still open to which day. We just want one day and will be celebrating our honeymoon while there. We only live two hours away but my fiancé has never done Disney and I am a huge fan!
which day would be your suggestion and what should we try to accomplish we are planning to do the main park and woul like to see fireworks…depending on availability. Any help with planning this magical day would be amazing!
J
Hiya Jamie what fun!
With just one day, you want to do the Magic Kingdom, and to do it the 12th–it’s open til 10, and has fireworks at 10. On the 13th it’s open only til 7 and has no fireworks.
I don’t have one day plans, but check the image ( especially the pink stuff on the right side) on this page http://yourfirstvisit.net/2011/03/09/the-comprehensive-guide-to-walt-disney-world-rides-and-attractions/, and also see some of the one-day Magic Kingdom plans on TouringPlans.com, e.g. http://touringplans.com/plans/56
Hi! This is my first time ever planning a trip to WDW , arriving Feb 12th(and just hanging out that day), then starting with the parks on Monday. Our last day to for the parks is Feb. 19. We will do all 4 Disney parks (no hopper) and universal and Islands of adventure. What days would you suggest to go to what parks(crowds)? With keeping in mind that 2/14 is my anniversary and we plan on going to Capone’s dinner show in the evening. Unless there is something that is more fun but not to expensive. I’m open to all suggestions. I have the dining plan, is there any places that are a “must see”? We would like to do at least one character dinner- Chef Mickey. Any advice for traveling with a 7yr and 3yr old? I’m overwhelmed and over thinking things, please any advice would be helpful.
Hi Katie! For where to eat, see this: http://yourfirstvisit.net/planning-your-first-family-trip/where-to-eat/
Your week is a low-crowd one, so you can’t go too far wrong. I’d suggest IOA on Monday the 13th–it will be less crowded, and it’s best to see Universal before Disney if you can. There’s not much there for kids the ages of yours, tho…
For the rest of your time, it’s more a matter of where not to go–avoid Epcot the 14th, avoid AK the 15th, avoid MK the 16th, and avoid HS the 18th! Your kids will find little of interest at Epcot, and a ton at MK. The other two parks are in-between–see http://yourfirstvisit.net/2011/03/09/the-comprehensive-guide-to-walt-disney-world-rides-and-attractions/
Dear Dave,
We are going to do our first visit to Disney with our young kids (ages 3 and 1). It’s my first visit as well! We looked at the age/height ideas and can afford to go back again in a few years so don’t mind that they won’t be able to go on a lot of the rides this time. This site is SO helpful for planning, I can’t imagine planning a trip like this on my own. There will be four adults (parents and grandparents, they are active but do like some rest) and the two kids. We are going to stay in a family suite. We will be there for 8 days Saturday Oct 20 to Sat Oct 27 (based on the best weeks to go). What parks should we avoid which days and with such young kids I was thinking based on what I’ve read here 3 days MK, 1 AK, 1HS and 1 Epcot (grandparents really want to go to all the parks). Also without a park hopper, is it advisable re-arrange the itinerary a bit or should we really spend the extra for park hoppers? We will do the Magic Your Way plus Dining as also suggested. Any dining reservations to cut from the basic itinerary with such young kids, any to skip since we will be missing a day? We have the list of rides that are the favorites of Preschoolers and will try to spend the days catering to their fun, we hope to trade off with the grandparents to be with the kids in the evenings so both couples can spend some time together at the parks. Any suggestions for this as well? Thanks again for this wealth of knowledge, its amazing!!
Hi Kristina and thanks for the kind words!
The basic itinerary applies to only a few weeks in December. For October, I’ll suggest a variant of the Autumn Winter Spring Itinerary, but won’t have the specifics for a month or so, when Disney releases its October calendar. As a result, I can’t yet advise the best days for the parks..check back with me in a month or so…http://yourfirstvisit.net/planning-your-first-family-trip/basic-itinerary/alternative-itineraries/
Your general approach and how you have allocated your days sounds right on. For dining, aimed at the kidsI’d go with only Chef Mickey’s and the Crystal Palace for the sit-down meals–the rest will go over the kids’s heads…owever, you need to pick sit-down dining venues for the adults to get the value out of your dining plan…see this: http://yourfirstvisit.net/planning-your-first-family-trip/where-to-eat/dining-alternatives/the-comprehensive-guide-to-walt-disney-world-dining/ but keep in mind that it is hard to get from one hotel to another…
You may end up wanting to keep the hoppers–at least for the adults–as adults tend to love Epcot in the evening…more than the one day in the kid program…
Hi Dave,
Great website! We’re a family of 4. My daughter is 13 and my son 9. We’re planning to stay at the Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort from August 28th leaving early AM Sept. 4th.
I was thinking of going to Disney studios the day we arrive (9:30 AM airport arrival), Magic Kingdom, followed by Epcot, one of the water parks Friday, off day Sat. (enjoy the resort), and Animal Kingdom Sunday. Monday Sept 3rd (Labor day) we’ll decide what Park we want to do over. So with all that said, question 1: What suggestions do you have as far as the room we should ask for at the resort. We’d like to be close to the main area and transportation. Question 2: what do you think of the park visit layout as far as lower crowds to maximize our experience? It’s our 2nd visit in 3 years, and 3rd overall. Thanks a bunch!
Hi Joe, and thanks!
Your visit plans sound spot on to me.
Re Coronado Springs, no worries about transportation, as bus stops circle the hotel grounds. For suggestions on areas to ask for, see my review here: http://yourfirstvisit.net/2009/10/19/review-disneys-coronado-springs-resort/
Hey Dave
I am planning my first trip to Disney world. The week of august 24th threw 31st I have a reservation at cindy’s for the 25th at 8:15am. Then we will be spending the rest of the day at
MK. I am going with my wife and 2 daughters ages 4 and 6 as well as my sister her boyfriend and my mother. We r going to hit Hollywood studios And the MK one more time in the week.
Also we would like to hit epcot on a night they have the fireworks just for the late afternoon and evening.I was wondering other than the 25th at the MK what would be the best days to see the rest of the parks listed?
Thanks
Jamie
Hi Jamie! Epcot does fireworks every night so no worries there. HS or Epcot would be good the 26th, Epcot the 27th, HS or MK the 28th, any the 29th, HS or Epcot the 30th. The best days for MK will be the 28th and 29th…
Such a great website! my family of 2 adults 2 kids ages 2 and 4 are planing our first disney trip after taking your advice to avoid the week of april 7 we changed our plans to April 18 – 24 (6 days) but im having trouble making an efficiant kid friendly itenirary (in what order to do which park and what to do in the evenings ) I noticed yor itenararies are very helpful but only go from sunday to sunday, im planning on coming on wedn and leaving the following tue, whats would be the best order to see the parks and what would be the best evening itenarary? Thanks for a lot of useful information!
PS we will be landing in orlando at 12pm and will have a rental car with us – thanks !
Hi Sami, and thanks! What time the 18th do you arrive, what time the 24th do you leave, how many ticket days did you buy, and where are you staying?
We will be arriving to the airport at 11:30am , catching the flight back at 6:30pm. We will be staying at the shreraton customs villages on I drive (I’m kicking myself for not finding your blog earlier before I booked, but for next time now we know)
*we will be staying at the sherton vistana village
Also, my children aren’t really big on naps, so that won’t be a big issue.
Hi Sami, given the ages of your kids, there’s little at Epcot, and not a ton at HS or AK, that they will enjoy. See the vertical part of this, which was designed for kids a little older than your 4yo: http://yourfirstvisit.net/2011/03/09/the-comprehensive-guide-to-walt-disney-world-rides-and-attractions/
Given that, I’d target two days at MK, and one each at HS and AK. For MK, your best days will be Friday and Tuesday, and avoid the 19th and 22nd. For AK, the best days are the 19th and 24th, and avoid the 18th and 23rd. For HS, the best days are the 19th, 20th, and 22nd, and avoid the 21st and 23rd.
Dave, I swear you are the Disney Angel, Thank you oh so much for giving me a clue.
Thanks Sami! Have a great trip and come back to let me know how it went!
Hey Dave
It’s me again. Just wondering if you happen to know when the under the sea ride in the new fantasyland is to open. Because both my girls are big Ariel fans and I don’t want to tell them about it un less I know it will be open when we go. Which is the last week of august this year
Thanks again
Jamie
Jamie, no one knows, but I really doubt it will be open in August. Oct-Nov seems more likely to me.
Hi Dave,
My sister and I are planning our first trip ever to Disney, she is 21 and I will be 20. We are going October 26 – November 3. We are staying at a resort in the animal kingdom area, we are getting the 7 day park hopper plus dining. We also plan on getting a 2 day park to park for Universal studios. Neither of us drive, do you know if will we be able to get a cab or something to transport us from our hotel to Universal? Also how soon should we make reservations for restaurants? Any other advice for the time we are going or just in general as it is our first trip? Thanks!
Hi Amanda!
For getting to Universal, see this: http://yourfirstvisit.net/2011/01/10/getting-to-harry-potter-from-walt-disney-world/
For what to do–and the most fun restaurants–see this. http://yourfirstvisit.net/planning-your-first-family-trip/basic-itinerary/alternative-itineraries/ You’ll need to adapt it to your dates, and the dining is biased toward “Kid-friendly.” A way to get at more “adult” places is to look at this: http://yourfirstvisit.net/planning-your-first-family-trip/where-to-eat/dining-alternatives/the-comprehensive-guide-to-walt-disney-world-dining/
The most popular dining options sell out soon after they are reservable, which is 180 days out. See this for a 180-day calendar: http://yourfirstvisit.net/planning-your-first-family-trip/when-your-plans-need-to-be-firm/90-and-180-day-calendars/ Your 180 day window is in just a couple of weeks!
Hello Dave!
Thanks for such a wonderful page!
We are arriving on this Friday 21, returning the 27th. Can you please advise me on what parks what days, my kids are 5&6 , my tickets are hopper. No car rental, staying @ Floridays. Military family, first visit, veryyyy overwhelmed and exciting! No idea what to do about food!
Muchas gracias!
Cyn
Hi Cyn, thanks, and what fun!
For kids the ages of yours, I’d skip Epcot and plan on two+ days at MK and one+ day each at HS and AK, with the remaining time spent returning to your favorite parks or relaxing.
Parks to avoid during your days (I’m including Epcot in case you ignore the above
)
4/20 Avoid Epcot
4/21 Avoid HS
4/22 Avoid MK
4/23 Avoid HS and AK
4/24 Avoid Epcot
4/25 Avoid AK
4/26 Avoid MK
4/27 Avoid HS
It’s gonna be tough for you to get dining reservations for the most fun restaurants this late–many sell out 5-6 months ahead. But check this page for recommendations: http://yourfirstvisit.net/planning-your-first-family-trip/where-to-eat/dining-alternatives/the-comprehensive-guide-to-walt-disney-world-dining/ Note that you’ll be able to eat either way–there’s plenty of “fast-food”-like options in the parks
Thank you so much for your quick response! We are here in Mouseland! Oh God! It was easier going to Europe for one month a few yrs ago, this is for the kids and I want it perfect! I forgot to ask you about sea world, is it worthing on a Saturday and with rain or we should wait?
Thanks again!
Hi Cyn, sorry but I don’t really have a strong opinion on Sea World…have fun!
what are the pros and cons of visiting last half of april 2013 ? (probably 4-13 to 4-20). when should I buy tickets and how many days is a good first time experience? PS. my wife doesn’t like to walk too much.
George, see weeks 8, 9 and 12 here. The “pros and cons” is hard to answer, as its a question of compared to what…late April 2013 has lower crowds and nicer weather than most of the year, and prices are average
Hi Dave,
Our first DW trip in October 14- 18. We are staying at the Grande Floridian and have kids ages 10 and 7.They both love to ride big rides (rollercoasters)and my 7 year old daughter is not a princess anymore. Since our trip is short and we want to use our time wisely what parks would you suggest doing and in what order? We fly in early Sunday on the 14th so we will start by noon Sunday and go hard until we leave early Thursday. My kids are pretty great going all day and again at night. Also suggestions on restaurants that my kids would enjoy. Many of my friends take months planning so I just want to get organized..help me if u can! Thanks
Hi Katie, there’s thrill rides in each of the parks, so I’d try to hit them all, making Epcot the lowest priority.
Suggest Epcot Sunday, MK Monday, AK Tuesday, and HS Wednesday.
At both MK and Epcot you’ll need to sharply prioritize. See this http://yourfirstvisit.net/2011/03/09/the-comprehensive-guide-to-walt-disney-world-rides-and-attractions/
For restaurants, look at one of my itineraries, e.g. this one: http://yourfirstvisit.net/planning-your-first-family-trip/basic-itinerary/alternative-itineraries/itineraries-for-the-rest-of-the-year/v2-of-2009-autumn-winter-spring-itinerary/ (Click the image)
or see this: http://yourfirstvisit.net/planning-your-first-family-trip/where-to-eat/dining-alternatives/the-comprehensive-guide-to-walt-disney-world-dining/
Hey, Dave. I am planning a trip to DW during Spring Break of 2013. April 22nd but I am flexible on which day to arrive & depart. We can leave the weekend before & also stay until the following weekend. I went when I was younger but havn’t been since I have been married with kids so this will be their 1st experience. They will be 9,9 & 7 when we go. I would like to go to MK 2 days, maybe AK & Epcot in the same day, HS & also the waterparks. I want to experience it all but I also want to slow down & enjoy the pool & just not be so rushed. We also plan on going to Universal & Islands of Adventure. How do I know 6 months ahead of time which parks open early & stay open late on certain days so I can plan character dining? Any pointers on certain parks certain days? Is it too cold for the waterparks in April? Any ideas & suggestions would be great.
Hi Julie–I can’t comment for Universal, but for Disney the calendars typically come out 6 months before, so April calendars will be out three months from now. At that time, I can help with stuff like which parks which days.
Couple of other thoughts in the meantime–your kids strike me as young for Universal, which caters to teens and people who love big thrill rides–super coasters and such–so you might defer that til your next visit. If Harry Potter is all you are after, you can handle that in a morning–IF you stay in a Universal hotel. See this: http://yourfirstvisit.net/2009/12/13/summary-of-instructions-for-your-first-family-visit-to-the-wizarding-world-of-harry-potter/
Also, at those ages, I’d skip Epcot, and budget two MK days, and one each at HS and AK.
April weather should be fine for water parks–see this: http://yourfirstvisit.net/planning-your-first-family-trip/when-to-go/next-best-dates/weather-and-when-to-go/
Hope this helps, and come back to me in three months!
Whoa. What a site! When I book, I will send some pixie dust your way by using Destinations Florida. Curious, what planning can they NOT do for me? Anyway, I was shooting for around 4/6/2013 because of son’s school schedule & I’ll have to take off from work anyway. Was surprised it is a low crowd week (I guess because of high prices?). If that’s true, I might convince my husband to do it. We have two young boys one turning 4 and the other is a mature 7 who already exceeds most key height requirements (we do plan on taking them back again in five or six years). Here’s the idea. Five or six days total. Probably a package with meals/park hopper. Two days MK, split-up 1/2 of each day to keep both kids happy. 1 day each at AK and HS. Maybe a day at the pool/slides. We can skip the girly stuff but hope the dates might involve Star Wars… do you happen to know? Any cool boyish stuff you can recommend would really be appreciated. If you can advise on what to avoid & when – that would help. Also, this is not specific to Disney, but do you have any insight on night-owl parents sharing a room with sleepy kids? Thanks, you are amazing!
Gosh Dave, I am sorry. Just came back to check my post and realize that the person who commented before me asked about April 2013 too… and I see your response now… you can’t answer yet. Very sorry for not paying closer attention earlier. I’ll make a note to check back with you in October, unless there is any preliminary advice you can offer before then. Thanks and sorry again.
Hi Susan and thanks–I noted you already saw no specifics for April yet. Hardly any kids are off that week, so you should be fine. Star Wars traditionally is late May and early June…
Susan no need to be sorry! And the Autumn-Winter-Spring itinerary will be very close to usable if you need something to start with–see this: http://yourfirstvisit.net/planning-your-first-family-trip/basic-itinerary/alternative-itineraries/itineraries-for-the-rest-of-the-year/v2-of-2009-autumn-winter-spring-itinerary/
Dave, I WON a trip to Disney World and would like to go Nov 9th thru 13th (4day/3night trip for four!) Won’t be able to do a lot of advance planning/reservations. Do you recommend any secondary dates for trying to get cancelled reservations? I thought I read somewhere to try 45 days out. How about the crowds, I know it’s veterans day weekend, but its still november, right?
)
Hi Gina, it’s not just Vet’s Day, but also the tail end of Jersey Week, so you may see moderate crowds through Monday. It’s true that some of the package dates get canceled 45 days out, but people aren’t too good at cancelling their dining right away, especially for the venues that don’t hold a credit card…so while that’s a good time to re-check, I’d keep rechecking the two weeks following 45 days…and book everything you can now!
Hello, I really like your sight it’s quite helpful. I’m planing a trip to WDW in March 2013 and after looking at your sight I’m a little worried the dates we want to go are not so good.
I guess what I’m asking is is the weather that bad? and are a lot of rides shut down? Are there better dates to go on around and is the weather or other things we should look into? I’m first time planer and second time goer to Disney. Thanks
We are on a bit of a tight budget and I have a guest going with us so I want her time to be just as magic as ours. It will be 3adaults and my 7yr old little girl. We want to do so much I think we have lost our minds. Were going from March 25th -31st. Or at least we were hopping to. My question is after reading your tips I’m thinking maybe we shouldn’t and maybe we should wait but 1 i don’t want to duh it’s Disney and 2 we could not go until June
Hi Becky! Your target week is one of the two or three worst of the year at WDW. See this: http://yourfirstvisit.net/2012/07/25/disney-world-crowds-2013-spring-break-2013/ Early June is much better! See http://yourfirstvisit.net/2011/09/25/2013-weeks-to-visit-walt-disney-world-ranked-in-order-continued/
Hi Dave,
Hi Dave,
I’m from Singapore. This is the 1st time im helping my boss to plan a family vacation for 4 to Disney World from 4th Nov -12th Nov ’12. He has 2 kids, age 12 (boy) & 15 (girl).
My boss would prefer to stay in a Deluxe Resort Hotel. What vaction package would you recommend? Im clueless, please help me.. THANK YOU..
Hi Trisha! Tell me a little more about what deluxe might mean to him–Ritz or Marriott? Two-room suite or one room where everyone sleeps in the same room? Concierge service?
Hi Dave!
Glad to hear from you
I read from your site that Disney Polynesian Resort, Disney Contemporary Resort & Disney Grand Florida Resort are ideal for 1st time visit. I would like to recommend any of the above mentioned deluxe resorts to my boss. He’ll prefer a 1/2 room suite with concierge service. Oh they will arrive late at night on 4th Nov ’12. They will start their adventure on 5th – 11th Nov.. Chk out early on 12th Nov. Hope my info is sufficient. Thank you
Hi Dave! This is such a wonderful, helpful blog! I have a family of 5 with 3 kids – 1, 4, and 12. We are headed to WDW 9/3 – 9/8, staying at the Port Orleans Hotel with the Dining Plan and no park hopper. First time for the family and have been researching every site on tips and advice on planning. Already made ADR. However, wanted to get your opinion on whether I should plan the days around the ADR or by magic hours. If I plan around ADR, none of the days coincide with the magic hours. And what are your suggestions for must do quick service dining as well as shows to see? Thanks for any guidance you can give me to help me make this a MAGICAL 1st time trip for my kids!
Trisha, I think any of these would be fine, given the ages of the kids.
However, also look into Bay Lake Tower a one or two bedroom villa with a Magic Kingdom view at Bay Lake tower.
No concierge service, but really nice rooms.
See this the details http://yourfirstvisit.net/2010/09/13/review-bay-lake-tower-at-disneys-contemporary-resort/ and I’ve also put here a floor plan of a two-bedroom villa.
The best dining options can sell out months in advance, so you need to start thinking about that too…let me know if the goal is fine dining, fun family dining, or silly dining (e.g. with Mickey Mouse) or some of each and I’ll give you some suggestions!
Linda–just to be clear–EMH, especially morning EMH, make a park bad the rest of the day. So long as your ADRs are not at parks with morning EMH, you are fine…
No quick-service is really “must do, but my recommendations are in the itineraries–see e.g. http://yourfirstvisit.net/planning-your-first-family-trip/basic-itinerary/alternative-itineraries/itineraries-for-the-rest-of-the-year/v2-of-2009-autumn-winter-spring-itinerary/ (Just click the image–dining is at the top of each day.
The evening fireworks shows are must sees–see this: http://yourfirstvisit.net/2010/10/26/fireworks-at-walt-disney-world/
Hi Dave,
Thks for the tips on hotel accomodation. As for the dinning plan, some of each would be good. Looking forward to hear your suggestion.
Hey Trish, see this: http://yourfirstvisit.net/planning-your-first-family-trip/where-to-eat/dining-alternatives/the-comprehensive-guide-to-walt-disney-world-dining/
For fine dining, go with Narcoossees or Citricos at the Grand Floridian, and the California Grill at Contemporary. For fun family dining, book Hoop Dee Doo Revue at Fort Wilderness, and for silly with Mickey Chef Mickey’s at the Contemporary (can be breakfast)…
Dave, you are awesome!
I truly appreciate your quick reply & all the suggestion..
THANK YOU VERY MUCH
Oh Trisha you are making me blush…
We are going to Disney for the first time March 10-17 2013. We have a party of 17 going age ranging from One Year to Adults. Some of us have the 4 day Hopper Military tickets, we plan to do Chef Mickey-B-Fest, Sea World and Gator Land. Can you please recommend what days are best that week for which parks, anything we shouldn’t miss out on ie. parades, shows fireworks? Also, any places we should def. eat at? We are not staying on site, we have a house 5 miles from the entrance. Thanks so much!!!
Hi Heather! For the don’t miss stuff, see this: http://yourfirstvisit.net/2011/03/09/the-comprehensive-guide-to-walt-disney-world-rides-and-attractions/ and for dining see this: http://yourfirstvisit.net/planning-your-first-family-trip/where-to-eat/
I don’t really cover Sea World and Gator Land, but in general those are better Sat-Tues.
For Disney World, these are parks to avoid by day:
3/10 Avoid MK
3/11 ” HS, AK
3/12 ” Epcot
3/13 ” AK
3/14 ” MK
3/15 ” Epcot
3/16 ” HS
3/17 ” MK
I expect that to be a very crowded week–see this: http://yourfirstvisit.net/2012/08/21/march-2013-walt-disney-world/
Ok Dave, it is Susan again (see above comments 36 & 37). I have contacted Destinations Florida through the link you provided and am booking my trip with them. You’re right, they’re good, but I feel like you’re even better, so I’m reaching out for your best advice. The dates are 4/6/13 -thru- 4/12/13… 6 nights. Me, two boys ages 3 & 7, and a less than thrilled husband. I need to cover the best stuff for the kids, and keep hubby entertained, all while maintaining a relaxed pace for my neurotic self. Splitting up for half a day (or two) is probable, and I will have park hoppers to make that easier. We don’t need to do everything, because we plan to go back in about 4 years. I truly appreciate any advice you can give us.
Hi Susan and thanks for the kind words! Given the ages, I do like the approach of two days at MK, one each at HS and AK you’d posted before, and splitting up–especially first thing in the morning. You can use my itineraries as a guide to your days, but sort between the 3yo and the 7yo based on this: http://yourfirstvisit.net/2011/03/09/the-comprehensive-guide-to-walt-disney-world-rides-and-attractions/
In terms of days, and ignoring Epcot, these are bad parks by day
4/6: Still the hangover of Easter crowds. MK and AK bad
4/7 Easter crowds largely gonr. MK bad
4/8 HS and AK bad
4/9 No bad parks among these three
4/10 AK bad
4/11 MK bad
4/12 No bad among the three
Dave, whoa, you are fast. Thank you! In case the hubby wants to hit epcot with my older son (when we split), when should he avoid that? And are there any newer attaractions/rides that might not be on your lists here? I see a lot of refences to 2009 and such.
Oh Susan, now I’m slow!
For Epcot, bad dates in your period are 4/9 and 4/12.
Sorry about the 2009 references… maintaining this site in my spare time is a bigger bite than I can sometimes chew…what will be different for your dates is the Fantasyland expansion, which is opening in stages, but there’s nothing specific different to do–just follow the instruction “See the rest of Fantasyland”!
My father in law surprised us last week with getting our honeymoon at disney world. Staying at the animal lodge. Other than watching some disney channel shows I have no idea what to see or how to plan because I have never been to disney world (or land)! I am super excited but want to make sure we can see the basics. Any ideas for a newly married couple who have never been to disney?
Mija, how sweet of him! Two quick questions first: do you know when (or roughly when) you are going, and for how many days–and did he buy you tickets, and if so for how many ticket-days…(and yes I know that’s three questions, sorry!)
Planning trip to DW visiting parts Sun 11/18 – Thurs. 11/22, 2012. will have two children ages 14 and 10 (their first time) what day do you recommend for each park to get the most out of this visit. We have our tickets for 4 days one park each day. will not be hopping parks this trip.
Dave,
Based on information here we are going to WDW 4/20/13-4/28/13 staying at AofA (mermaid rm) with the dining plan for myself, hubby and two girls (3&5). So excited!!! The 180 window opened today and I managed to get most all the ADR’s I wanted …. though I could not get a decent time for the Brown Derby Fantasmic pkg so I substituted Hollywood and Vine plus Libery Tree Tavern another day with the other credit. The problem came with the Cirque tickets. The online system kept showing me the same (undesirable) cat 2 spots no matter how many times I cancelled and restarted throughout the day. When I called so I could hopefully inprove on the seat locations, the very nice CM said that he could not book seats more than 180 days out, so 4/24/13 would not be available until this Friday10/26/12. I told him I had a room confirmation and – after checking – he came back and said the 180 days from check-in did not apply to Cirque tickets. Did I just misunderstand the to-do list? I am pretty sure that I will get decent tickets in a few days anyway, it was just a slight let down not to “finish” everything after getting up at 0445 here in Texas this morning.
Charlotte, that’s one of the busiest weeks of the year, and there’s not a ton of difference among the parks–they are all crowded all the time. So I can’t give you best days. I can give some points on parks to avoid by day, however:
11/18 Avoid MK
11/19 Avoid HS and AK; MK pretty lousy too.
11/20 Avoid Epcot
11/21 Avoid AK
11/22 Avoid MK
I’m sorry Michele, that’s my mistake.
Hi Dave – I love your site!!! I have been in touch before about dates and you were so kind to offer your advice. Now we have our dates picked and I am trying to determine our itinerary (it is making my head spin). This is our fourth trip to Disney and we have 4 children under 9 years old and grandparents traveling with us. I followed your itinerary pretty closely last time we went to WDW so now I am trying to mix things up a bit (could be a big mistake). Here’s what I am thinking for a schedule. I would be so grateful if you could give me your thoughts!
4/25 – Arrive on flight at 6:40 pm/Check in/Eat at hotel (Art of Animation)
4/26 – Animal Kingdom by 8:30 am/Break in afternoon/Dinner at Ohana
4/27 – Epcot by 8:30 am/Break in afternoon/Back to Epcot and Dinner at Teppan Edo
4/28 – Sleep in/CRT at 10 am/Magic Kingdom for few hours/Break/Dinner at Boma
4/29 – Hollywood Studios by 8:30 am/Lunch at 50′s PT/Break/Back to HS for Fantasmic
4/30 – Magic Kingdom by 8:30 am/Lunch at Be Our Guest/Break/Dinner in Epcot OR Go back to MK after the break for dinner at Be Our Guest (I can’t decide…)
5/1 – Sleep in/Chef Mickey’s for brunch/Free choice/Break/Crystal Palace for dinner and stay for parade and fireworks
5/2 and 5/3 – Change hotels and go over to explore Universal (I have not figured this out yet)
5/4 Fly home and SLEEP
Please let me know what you think. Thanks so much!!
Hi Emma, great to hear from you again!
Mostly I love your itinerary. There’s one problem, and I have two suggestions.
The problem is that as of today there’s no evening parade on 5/1. Wishes is on, but not the parade. I don’t know how much that matters–once every few years for the parade is fine for me, but I see Wishes at least 4 times a year!
My first suggestion–and only you know your family well enough to know if this matters–is that you are over-scheduled, with table service meals on too many days. I think that for a second or later visit, having a full day–or even two–with nothing definitively planned makes the visit overall much more fun. That day you can take off, go to a park, or split up, as the spirit moves you the night before. You could get this day back by taking one of the Universal days–there’s not really enough there for kids the ages of yours to spend more than two mornings…
Finally, my second suggestion–if you do decide to go with BOG for dinner get your reservations right at the 180 day mark, which is coming soon!
Hi! I love your site! My husband and won’t to plan a short trip for My birthday November 15-17. We live in the panhandle so this will be about a 7 hour drive. We are on a very tight budget so I was even thinking about pitching a tent at fort wilderness. I have never camped before but figured this sounded more like luxury camping. Your thoughts on that? Also- ideas/ tips for teacher discounts? Florida resident discounts? Birthday specials? My favorite parks are animal kingdom and Epcot so I would be fine if we only went there although I do love magic kingdom too. It seems to me that will not be crowded time as the thanksgiving crowd arrives on the 18th. Would you agree? Honestly- I really just want to take my husband on my two favorite rides Soarin and the Mount Everett and catch some beautiful fireworks and do it in the most cost effective, least stressful manner- and I was hoping you can help me out with that. We have had a really tough month and could use a happy get away.:). Thank you.
Hi Nicole! I can’t recommend doing your first tent-camping at Fort Wilderness.
First you need a lot of gear beyond a tent to be comfortable. (I can give you more details, but trust me!)
Second, it adds complexity in excess of the cost savings.
Suggest you target a value resort instead. All-Star Music is my choice for husband/wife visits in the values. See this: http://yourfirstvisit.net/2010/07/27/review-disneys-all-star-music-resort/ There’s a room rate deal out right now but it has to be booked by the end of October–see this: http://yourfirstvisit.net/2012/08/27/disney-world-room-rate-deal-late-september-late-december-2012/
For tickets, see this: http://www.mousesavers.com/sources-for-discounts-on-walt-disney-world-tickets/
Hi Dave,
We will be in Florida Oct 29-Nov 7. We have a 6 day hopper pass and 1 day pass at seaworld. In our group we are 2 adults, a 6 year old boy, 4 year old girl, and 5 month old boy. On Oct 30 we have lunch booked at akershus to dine with the princesses. What day do you suggest we do each park including sea world? Or which days should we avoid a certain park? We were also wondering about Mickey’s not so scary halloween party? I’m not sure our kids will be able to stay up that late to enjoy it for the price of $70. We are staying off site in a gated community called Windsor Hills ( 2 miles from Disney) and we have a rental car. If you do not suggest Mickey’s party, do you have any suggestions for a location to go trick or treating? (We will be bringing our costumes).
I also was wondering about our baby? Will I be able to bring him on a few rides or board the ride and pass him off to my husband once he finishes the ride or vice verse and we ride seperately?
Thanks, Sandra
Hi Dave,
We are going to Disney from January 26-31, staying at the Royal Plaza. We have 3 kids, ages 10, 9, and 7. Getting a 4 day pass — no park hopper — so we can visit every park once, but we want to go to a character breakfast and maybe the Hoop De Doo Revue for dinner. Any suggestions/ideas of which breakfast to chose, also, are there better days to visit each of the park? It seems that the week we are going should not be very crowded.
Thanks for your help — love this site!
Jenn
Hi Jenn, and thanks for the love! Yes, you are in a low-crowd period. On your dates, MK is best the 29th and 30th, HS the 27th and 29th, AK the 29th and 31st, and Epcot the 27th and 28th. Sorting through this, I’d target:
27th: HS
28th: Epcot
29th: AK
30th: MK
On such a short trip, honestly I’d skip any formal meals with the exception of the evening of your Animal Kingdom day. AK will close around 5p or 6p (currently 5, but may be extended when final Jan calendars come out) so doing a later Hoop Dee Doo that night makes sense. Otherwise your dining comes at the expense of rides….
WOW,
How I wish I had found this site earlier!
But still hoping you can help.
We arrive in Orlando on 2nd Feb – Next Week!!!! (for 14 nights)
Have booked the Disney 14 day package and the Orlando flexi plus.
Travelling from UK with 2 adults and 4 children – age 14, 12, 10 and 8 staying in a private villa. (We’ve hired a car)
we have been to Euro Disney a few times, so will not spend much time at MK or HS – just go and see/do the shows/rides not available at Eurodisney.
Can you recommend an itinery for us?
We want to make sure we have a couple of ‘chill’ days.
Up until today – and seeing this site, we had been planning on ‘going with the flow’! but now think we should organise ourselves a bit more.
Thanks
kim
Hi Kim, and I’m glad you found me. What I’m gonna do is give you some principles, because with your trip length there’s to many variables to give you specifics.
1. The Disney parks are most busy Saturday, Sunday and Monday, and the non-Disney parks least busy those days. So try to hit any non-Disney parks Sat-Mon
2. AT least one Disney park has “extra magic hours” for Disney hotel guests every day. On any given day, avoid the park(s) with EMH that day.
3. MK will not have the evening parade every night, and sometimes will close fairly early. It’ll be less busy on days it closes early and has no evening parade
4. At all parks, the best plan is to arrive at the turnstiles well before they open, and to then ride the rides that get build crowds quickly first. At Disney, you’d also then use FASTPASSES to hit other long wait rides. Take afternoons off if you need to
5. For sorting out whihc rides to see, see this: http://yourfirstvisit.net/2011/03/09/the-comprehensive-guide-to-walt-disney-world-rides-and-attractions/
Hope this helps and have a great trip!

Thank You Dave,
Just a little excited here right now
Dave,
Wow! So much information and I’m so
Overwhelmed!! But I want to make this trip for my family very special. Question… Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue…. Are the seating prices separate from the meal plan? I’m assuming they are but I thought I’d ask. Thank you!
Hi Rebecca, you can use two table service credits from the Dining Plan to pay for Hoop. See also this (if you haven’t already): http://yourfirstvisit.net/2012/04/24/review-the-hoop-dee-doo-musical-revue/

Hi Dave!
So I arrived a little late to your site, but I would love your opinions for my upcoming itinerary! We are four adults and one 22 month old, we all LOVE Disney and can’t wait to be in the World! We are going to arrive on Friday, May 2nd and leave Thursday, May 9th. We are staying at Vacation Villages at Parkway, and are renting a car. I want to spend two days in MK, one at HS and one at EP (that day will be without the baby). Do you have advice on which park to see which day? Also, I neglected to read about ADRs until now… are there any options at this point for table dining reservations anywhere?? Thanks so much!
Hi Phoebe!
On ADRS, I’m sure there’s some–they just may not be the most fun. Use one of my itineraries–e.g this http://yourfirstvisit.net/planning-your-first-family-trip/basic-itinerary/alternative-itineraries/itineraries-for-the-rest-of-the-year/v2-of-2009-autumn-winter-spring-itinerary/ and use this for backups to the ones that are sold out: http://yourfirstvisit.net/planning-your-first-family-trip/where-to-eat/dining-alternatives/the-comprehensive-guide-to-walt-disney-world-dining/
Between May 3 and May 8, I’d advise MK the 7th and 8th, HS the 5th, and Epcot any of the other days!
