Stitch’s Supersonic Celebration recently opened in the Tomorrowland section of the Magic Kingdom. A scheduled hi-tech stage show running several times a day, it is not worth changing your schedule for, but if you are in that area of the park when it begins, it’s worth giving a look.
The show—when it works—combines a taped pre-show, live dancers, and a big-screen Stitch who interacts with audience, using the same technology as at Turtle Talk with Crush at Epcot and the Monsters Inc Laugh Floor, also at the Magic Kingdom.
We checked it out on three days in mid-May 2009.
The first day, for some reason the interactive technology was not working, and was replaced by a costumed Stitch instead. As a result, the pre-show no longer made much sense, and the show itself has to be carried by the dancing. The dancing was unobjectionable, but also uninteresting.
The second day the show went off as planned. Stitch’s interaction with crowd definitely improved it. That said, it is not as good as Laugh Floor, and not remotely as good as Turtle Talk, which continues to set the standard for the implementation of this technology at Walt Disney World.
The fundamental difference is the characters involved, and the story of the show. Stitch (and Mike Wazowski, for that matter) just isn’t fun, interesting, and/or charming enough to pull off much within the weak storylines these shows occupy.
The third time we visited, it was canceled entirely at the last minute—perhaps related to the remarkable downpour at the moment, which began more than a week of fairly constant rain at Disney World.
The show is located in the open air, in front of a newly constructed stage/screen between the Astro-Orbiters and the Carousel of Progress. Daily schedules are on the Times Guide, available at the entrance to the Magic Kingdom.
