CHANGES TO 2011 WEEKS TO VISIT, MOSTLY MINOR

I’ve just published a revised version of this site’s 2011 Weeks to Visit Walt Disney World, Ranked in Order.

Nineteen of 2011’s 52 weeks had changes to their week ranking–but for 16 of these 19, the changes were minor–up or down 5 positions or fewer, and no change in how the week was categorized.

(I categorize the weeks as Recommended Weeks, Worse Weeks, and Weeks to Avoid.)

…BUT NOT ALL CHANGES ARE MINOR…

Three weeks, however, had major changes in their rankings, and two of these three also had changes in their category.

President’s Day week jumped thirteen positions, to the 39th ranked week.  This still puts it in the “Weeks to Avoid” category, but not so deeply within it.

This change is based on research published a few months ago on ride closures at Walt Disney World.  I recognized that I was dinging this week too much for ride closures, and have adjusted its ratings accordingly.

The week of March 19th also jumped 13 positions, and moved from “Weeks to Avoid” just barely into “Worse Weeks.”

This week moved because I have now almost completed my analysis of spring breaks for school age children.

I now have data for all but 5 or so of the 140 school districts whose spring breaks I analyze. I’ll add the missing ones when they make their 2010-2011 calendars available, but it will not change the results from the other 135.

Based on this new data, it is now clear that the March peak for spring break will be not the week of March 19th.

Rather, it will be the week of March 12th.

(The April peak will be Easter weekend, and the week before it.)

As a result, I’ve improved the ranking of March 19th.

Necessarily, I’ve also dropped the ranking for March 12th–by 14 positions, moving it from being just barely in the “Worse Weeks” category to firmly into the “Weeks to Avoid” category.

POSSIBLY ONE MORE REVISION COMING

The price seasons reflected in 2011 Weeks to Visit Walt Disney World, Ranked in Order are based on forecasts.

Walt Disney World typically publishes actual price seasons in August.

If these are materially different than my forecasts, then I will do an additional revision shortly after they are published.
