August 2016 at Walt Disney World

August 2016 at Disney World from yourfirstvisit.netThis page reviews August 2016 Walt Disney World crowds, prices, deals and discounts, weather, and operating hours; adds a few other notes; and ends with week by week summaries.

There are no great times for first-timers who may never return to visit in August. Kids start going back to school in August, so crowds go down later in the month–but that’s also when the peak of the hurricane season kicks off.

Prices begin the month low at the deluxes, OK at the moderates, and high at the values. Moderate and value prices drop to among the lowest of the year August 19.

For first-timers who can’t return, the best week is that beginning 8/6–higher crowds and prices than later in the month, but lower hurricane risk.

For those who can return–or are returning–the later in the month, the better.

As more and more kids go back to school, crowds moderate over the course of August.

On a crowd scale of 1-11, the week beginning 7/30 has a crowd rating of 8/high-minus, the week beginning 8/6 7/moderate-plus, the week beginning 8/13 6/moderate, the week beginning 8/20 4/low-plus, and the week beginning 8/27 3/low.

See this for more on 2016 crowds at Disney World.

Prices begin the month 45% higher than the lowest of the year at the values, 15% higher than the lowest of the year at the moderates, and 3% higher than the lowest of the year at the deluxes.

On August 14, prices at the values drop to 25% higher than the lowest of the year, prices at the deluxes shift to the lowest of the year, and prices at the moderates see a minor uptick (the uptick is mostly due to differences between how weekends work during the two price seasons).

On August 19, prices at the values and moderates drop to 10% higher than the lowest of the year, while deluxe prices remain at the lowest level of the year.

Deals are available for August 2016. Details are here.

August weather is hot and humid, with afternoon storms common.

The hurricane season officially begins June 1, but hurricanes a rarely a threat until mid-August. The peak of the hurricane season begins then.

Hurricanes rarely have an impact on a Disney World vacation, but mid-August begins the period when such an impact is most likely.

Park operating hours vary by the day, and sometimes change without notice. It is rare for hours to be shorter than Disney has publicized, but Disney may lengthen them in response to unanticipated crowds.

The best way to keep up with operating hours is to check Disney’s official calendars, usually available six months in advance.

These calendars can be found by clicking the following links:

Hi Dave,
Have you any recommendations as to which parks to visit/avoid 17-30 August please? It’ll be me, my hub, son aged 9 and daughter aged 7. We’re from UK so we’ll be awake ridiculously early the first few days, I’m hoping we can capitalise on it and get to rope drops. I’ve only managed the first day so far (thinking Epcot?) and it took me ages to work that one out! Thank you in advance for any help.

Becky, see this from my co-author Josh.

Hi Bev, see this.

I’m looking for plans Aug 21, 22, & 23. Had originally booked fp+ and dining but now reconsidering as a prefer buffet style vs. Traditional pick a meal.

7 Dave { 07.08.16 at 9:56 am }

Rose, not quite understanding your question–there are plenty of buffets on the dining plan…

Re your dates, how old are the kids (if any) and which parks you are targeting?

8 Steve { 07.26.16 at 5:28 pm }

Will be at WDW from 19th August for 2 weeks. We have fast passes from 12-3pm most days. We are now getting advice to avoid the parks between 12-5pm due to heat/humidity, but others say avoid from 3pm. What do you advise?

9 Dave { 07.28.16 at 8:11 am }

Steve peak crowds are between 11 and 2, and the heat peaks later. With FastPass+, the crowds don’t matter much except at Hollywood Studios, which has fewer low-wait rides to complement your FastPass+.

With as many days as you have in the parks, days that focus on the morning, then a long break, then FastPass+ in the late afternoon/early evening, may well be a good approach.
