Disney World’s New Lightning Lane Single Pass and Multi Pass Program

By Dave Shute

In late July 2024, Walt Disney World replaced its Genie+/Individual Lightning Lane approach to saving time otherwise spent waiting in lines with Lightning Lane Single Pass and Lightning Lane Multi Pass.

This was the fourth change to Disney World’s skip-the-line approach in a decade:

  • FASTPASS were free with your ticket, were only available the day of a visit, had no advantages for those staying in a Disney World hotel, and could not have specific times targeted. These were fully replaced in 2014 by…
  • FastPass+, which were free with your ticket. Up to three per day could be booked beginning 60 days ahead for Disney resort hotel guests (and guests at a few other hotels*) and 30 days ahead for -everyone else. Tiering was common—only one ride could be pre-booked from among the most popular rides. Specific times could be targeted. These were replaced in 2021 by…
  • Genie+ and Individual Lightning Lane, each of which had a charge in addition to your ticket. Like the original FASTPASS, rides could only be booked on the day of a visit. Genie+ times could not be targeted, but Individual Lightning Lane times could be targeted. Disney resort hotel guests had a slight advantage in booking Individual Lightning Lane rides. Genie+ had no tiers, but some rides being only available for their own charge as Individual Lightning Lane rides created de-facto tiers. These were replaced in July 2024 by…
  • Lightning Lane Single Pass and Lightning Lane Multi Pass.

LIGHTNING LANE SINGLE AND MULTI PASS AT WALT DISNEY WORLD

Disney World’s new Lightning Lane Single Pass (LLSP) and Lightning Lane Multi Pass (LLMP) These continue to have additional charges on top of your ticket.

Disney resort hotel guests (and guests at a few other hotels*) can purchase these and book up to two LLSP and three LLMP per day beginning seven days before their arrival date, for the entire length of their stay (up to 14 days). That is, you can book all your days at once, as soon as 7a seven days before arrival has rolled around. (Note: at launch, guests must appear to Disney’s IT systems to be physically present in the US or Canada to purchase LLSP or LLMP.)

Everyone else can begin pre-booking three days before their first ticket day.

Tiers are implicit in all parks because some rides can only be pre-booked via a special purchase as LLSP; in addition, Multi Pass tiers are present in all the parks except Disney’s Animal Kingdom. One can only pre-book one Tier One ride. If you do so, you can book two more Tier 2 rides. If you don’t book any Tier 1 rides—as will be the case at Animal Kingdom, and as you may choose to do at the other parks—you can book three Tier 2 rides.

Specific times can be targeted for all LLSP and LLMP rides—subject to availability, of course.

Every single ride remains available for no additional charge. For almost all, this means waiting in the “standby” line, but for three rides—Rise of the Resistance in Hollywood Studios, and TRON Lightcycle Run and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure in Magic Kingdom—you access them for free by winning what is in effect a virtual lottery by successfully joining a “Virtual Queue” on the day of your visit. For more on virtual queues, see this.

For a draft Disney World itinerary using LLMP and LLSP, see this.

(Note that many LLSP and Tier 1 LLMP rides are also available during Early Entry, which happens every day at every park.  Early entry is a great way to see especially a Tier 1 ride.)
