The 2014 Epcot International Food and Wine Festival

By Dave Shute

The 2014 Epcot International Food and Wine FestivalEvery year from late September through mid-November, Walt Disney World presents the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival.

For 2014, the dates will be September 19 through November 10–starting a week earlier than past years..

There are two components to the festival, one available to all Epcot visitors, and another made up of a bunch of events which have limited capacity and require reservations.

Neither has an extra ticket admission cost–you get to participate by virtue of your theme park ticket–but there are cash costs for the food, wine, and for entry to some special shows and events.

The basic program takes place in Epcot’s World Showcase area.

Supplementing the already rich variety of dining and snacking options in the World Showcase, the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival adds dozens of stalls highlighting the foods and drinks of various regions of the world.

The food from these stalls is typically available in a snack to half-plate size. Some, but not all, can be purchased using snack credits from the Disney Dining Plan.

Note that the cash price of items available as snack under the dining plan can vary by a factor of 3–don’t use a snack credit until you know that you don’t want to use it on something more expensive.

Wine and other alcoholic beverages are also available for purchase, by the glass or equivalent. Snack credits can’t be used for these!

In addition, there’s a whole list of programs for which reservations are required.

These will range from wine tastings, to food and wine pairings, to cheese seminars.

These programs are usually announced in the summer, and the more popular sell out very quickly.

See the official Walt Disney World web page for details on the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival as they emerge here.

Returning adults often plan their entire trip around the Food and Wine Festival.

For first-time family visitors, with 8 year olds in tow, it is a good bit less relevant.

The booths and such of the festival add a bit to the pageantry of World Showcase, but in general do not increase World Showcase’s appeal to kids.

Because of this, my material on when to go to Walt Disney World ignores the dates of the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival as either a positive or a negative influence.

That said, I rank several weeks that happen to occur during this period highly.

Highly ranked 2014 weeks during the festival include the weeks beginning 10/18 and 10/22/2014.

Great article!! This will be my first trip to WDW!! I’m so excited!

2 Dave { 03.06.14 at 8:34 am }

Thanks, Dave! And you’ll have a ball.

3 Mike Pautsch { 03.08.14 at 12:27 pm }

My wife and I are going to WDW on 10/30/2014 – 11/4/2014. What would be the best day to go to the food and wine festival. A majority of our time is going to be spent at epcot center, however we may see others. Were both excited

Hi Mike, the calendars for then won’t be out for 6 weeks or so, so I can’t give you sharp advice, but base don past operating calendars the least crowded days at Food and Wine are typically Mondays and Thursdays.

Whole family are planning on revisiting wdw Florida (from Scotland) in September 2015 but dont want to miss out on the food and wine festival as we had a terrific time there in October 2013. Any ideas as to the date it may start in 2015?We need to book early because of a lack of direct flights from Scotland.

6 Dave { 03.13.14 at 7:40 am }

Jacqui, I don’t. This year it’s starting a week earlier than recent years, and I don’t know if that will be true in 2015 or not. If it follows the older pattern, it’ll officially open September 25, 2015; if it follows this year’s pattern, the 18th.

I just noticed that we will be there and actually going to Epcot on Sept. 20th. I have a 8 year old and our other days are booked for other parks MK, HS. Do you think on the 20th it would be too crazy for a child to be there it being the wine and food festival? I have never been there for that so i have no idea. Is that going to be a crazy day since it starts the day before?

Thanks !!

8 Dave { 03.24.14 at 7:50 am }

Lisa, Epcot’s World Showcase area will be very crowded in the evening, but you should otherwise be OK, as there’s not a ton in World Showcase of interest to most kids anyway. Arrive before the park opens, and use FastPass+!

9 Lisa { 03.24.14 at 4:37 pm }

Thank you!!

10 Theresa Wilson { 05.16.14 at 3:36 pm }

Hi Lisa – Thanks for all the great tips! We are attending Epcot on Sunday, 10/21 with two kiddos. Do you think it will be too crowded?

11 Dave { 05.17.14 at 7:04 am }

Hi Theresa, I get 10/21 as a Tuesday…?

12 Jo { 05.17.14 at 3:44 pm }

Is there a restaurant during the food & wine festival that I can book in advance for a good viewing of the light show.

13 Dave { 05.18.14 at 10:29 am }

Jo, nothing with a guaranteed view.

14 Shawn { 06.27.14 at 3:18 pm }

Your site is always a great tool for us as often as we go to Disney. Having an autistic son using your site to best pick a low crowd week really helps. This year we are planning to go the week of the 18th and want to avoid the large crowds at Epcot during Food and Wine but also want to hit the Food and Wine fest a little. Would going on a Monday be best for this?

15 Shawn { 06.27.14 at 3:19 pm }

Make that Oct 18th

16 Dave { 06.29.14 at 8:35 am }

Hi Shawn, and I’m so glad the site is helping! Yes, Monday the 20th would be a great choice for Epcot!

17 Thaddeaus { 07.30.14 at 1:16 am }

Your recommendation for saving your snacks for the more expensive items is great. That’s what I typically do. But, this year, I noticed the top of the menu on Disney’s website said that dining plan would not be accepted. So, is it a sure thing that snacks will be accepted this year, or did they make a policy change? Thanks for your help in advance!

18 Dave { 07.30.14 at 6:45 am }

Hey Thaddeaus–great question, but I think it’ll be OK. See this:

19 Penny { 08.30.14 at 9:32 pm }

I noticed the same thing that Thaddeaus noticed, that the Disney website stated that the dining plan would not be accepted at the festival. I called Disney to confirm and they told me that it was new this year – the dining plan snack credits could not be used to purchase items at the Festival Marketplace. Did this person tell me the wrong thing?

20 Dave { 09.03.14 at 7:42 am }

Penny, honestly we won’t know for sure for a couple of weeks…

21 Donna Payne { 09.24.14 at 12:53 pm }

Do you have the dates for the 2015 Food & Wine Festival?

22 Dave { 09.25.14 at 6:33 am }

Hi Donna, they won’t be out for months… Based on trends, September 25 through November 8 is a good bet, although Disney went a week earlier in Sept this year.

23 Lisa { 10.06.14 at 1:57 pm }

Well we went to the Food and Wine Festival on our visit with my 8 year old. The day was fine and we did use our fast passes thanks for the good advice.

Was a little surprised though as soon as it got dark it seemed that we were surrounded by a bunch of drunks that really couldn’t hold their liquor. We didn’t want to be stuck on the bus with that kind of crowd at the closing of the park so we decided to skip a few things and go back to the hotel and swim. so little disappointed but that is ok we got in what we wanted to do while we were there.

24 An { 10.10.14 at 11:28 am }

Hello Dave,

My husband and I are catching the tail end of the food and wine festival. We plan on going the last day Monday, Nov 10th. Our only option is Saturday, Nov 8th. I heard that they often run out of foods on the last day, and don’t want that to be our experience. Have you ever been on the last day? Any advice?

25 Dave { 10.10.14 at 5:23 pm }

An, I have not heard of them running out–they may, I just have not heard of it…am checking with some friends

26 Dave { 10.11.14 at 9:54 am }

An I’ve followed up with a couple of friends–including Kristen from –and they agree that running out of food is not an issue!
