Is Walt Disney World Free on Your Birthday?

By Dave Shute

(This page is one of a series explicating Walt Disney World lingo, abbreviations, and FAQ for first time family visitors to Walt Disney World.)

Disney World free on your birthday 2012DISNEY WORLD FREE ON YOUR BIRTHDAY?

As many as two dozen people a day come to this site with some version of “Is Disney free on your birthday?” as the words they entered into a search engine.

Here’s the bad news: there used to be a deal where Disney World offered free tickets on your birthday.  But there isn’t one anymore.  Disney world tickets are the same price on your birthday as they are on any other day.

DISNEY WORLD BIRTHDAY SPECIALS

But there are still some fun birthday offers from Disney World, and some of them are free!

Free Disney World birthday stuff includes:

  • A happy birthday button (see the image at the top, courtesy of Kristin’s Tips from the Disney Diva), which you can get either from your Disney World resort hotel or from guest services in the parks. Mike at My Dreams of Disney reminds me that Disney strictly enforces when you can get this free birthday button–it must be within 6 months before, or 6 months after, your birthday!
  • A happy birthday call–dial 0 in your resort to schedule it
  • Perhaps, a happy birthday cupcake as the finale to a Disney World table service meal.
  • And of course you can bring birthday celebration materials from home!

OTHER WALT DISNEY WORLD BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

Much more celebration of birthdays at Walt Disney World is possible–but not for free.

Options include birthday cakes ($21 and up), birthday parties ($16 per person and up), and many others. (Prices are from The Complete Walt Disney World 2012.)

The last time my wife wore the Birthday Button around WDW a castmember at Epcot’s American Adventure noticed it.

He made a big deal of her and said she had an important phone call. He then escorted her to a phone in the entrance to the waiting area for the attraction (to the left). It was a recorded birthday message from Mickey Mouse.

After the call he escorted her to the LIberty Inn restaurant next door and got a birthday cupcake for her.

We were at Disney Studios in 2009 and I was wearing a birthday button. A cast member working at the ice cream stand near the Rockin’ Roller Coaster noticed it and gave me a free ice cream cone and wished me a happy birthday with the rest of the cast there. It was great.

Do u have a number that people can call to find out what Disney is doing for people on their birthday in 2013?

8 Dave { 01.30.13 at 5:34 am }

No, Nikki, I don’t. I don’t think its doing anything other than what you see on this page.

Hey Dave. Just to clarify what you said about getting the birthday button within six months before or after your birthday. My family is going in early August with a bunch of friends, and there are three kids that I know of for sure who have birthdays within 6 months. Does this mean we can get the buttons on whatever day and wear them on whatever day of the trip we want to?

Thanks!

10 Dave { 06.27.13 at 7:16 am }

Abigail, yes you can get a birthday button just by asking! No ID with an actual birthdate is required 🙂

When people say that Disney is cheap and dont do anything for free that really isnt true. I went last year in september and when i arrived my ankle was a little swollen. I said is the little mermaid room far away from the buses. The cast member at Art of Animation said about 10 minutes. I said do you ever do free upgrades to a room closer to the buses. She looked at my ankle and said you bet! She gave us the much bigger room in the Lion King area with no additional charge. It was right across from the buses and was much bigger.

we are going to Disneyworld in October 26-Nov 1. it is my husbands Birthday on Oct 27,our 4 year old granddaughter on October 19,my Birthday on October 23 and our anniversary on October 19.Here it is 3 months before we go and I can’t get reservations for Cinderellas Royal Table.I have tried since June and now it is August.I have got to get this reservation for our trip

20 Dave { 08.03.14 at 1:09 pm }

Betty, reservations for Cindy your dates opened at the end of April. It’s one of the two or three most-sought reservation, so likely was largely booked by mid-May. People do cancel, so I’d suggest that you keep trying…

21 Rosio Antunez { 08.24.14 at 2:13 pm }

My 8th
birthday is coming up on September 3rd.. i thought he could get in for free but, i read here he cant that totally sucks but, at least i hope he has a good day here im so waiting for those turkey legs they sell…. and watching the parade with my son. Its his first time coming to disneyland.

22 Jason { 11.18.15 at 10:05 am }

Is it true that if you have the same birthday as Mickey Mouse, November 18th, you get in free on November 18th?

23 Dave { 11.19.15 at 9:55 am }

Great idea, Jason!

24 Christina { 03.12.16 at 12:26 am }

How do i get the buttons for my mother and I. I will be there March 17

25 Dave { 03.12.16 at 10:15 am }

Christina, just ask at guest relations, or your hotel if you are staying in a Disney-owned hotel.

26 Julian { 03.03.16 at 7:15 pm }

Disney is a corporation. At the end of the day, profits are all the the CEO’s care bout. A 100.00 ticket and all you get is a button and a call from mocked that’s pre-recorded? I’ll pass and go to Busch gardens.

27 Christina { 03.12.16 at 12:23 am }

I’m going to Disney March 17th. My birthday is March18th my mom’s birthday was March 07, she’s 73 years old and has dreamed about Disney ever sense she seen it get built. I’m so glad to be taken her here and i love guest services on kissimmie in creation they have me great prices on tickets with a free 5 day upgrade. This trip is worth every penny to make my moms dreams come true.

28 Brian Perry { 12.01.16 at 3:03 pm }

It does seem rather cheap to not offer free birthday tickets. We drove all the way from Indiana time Orlando when I was a kid and people come from a lot farther than that. You’d think they’d reward your loyalty. Not to mention you probably aren’t usually going to come by yourself.
