Just rode Space Mountain for the first time in 20 years. I agree with the others. I saw a lot of upgrades at WDW since my last trip in the early 00s. This was the only refurbishment job that disappointed. I was really looking forward to being able to show my kids the coasters dimly lit in the distance while we waited, whipping around like they did in the old days.

Did they add music as well? When I rode it (several times pre-2009) I remember it being eerily silent most of the way round, all you could hear was the actual shuttle’s moving across the track and 2 parts with sound effects (the previous versions of which were far, far more atmospheric). I’ve watched more recent videos and there seems to be weird intermittent disco-esque space music. Am I forgetting this was always there?

I’m also very fond of the old uncovered loading area – it’s where me and my Dad used to scream at the top of our voices in front of bemused guests whilst waiting for the ride to actually start!

Jordan, you are testing my memory, and it is not passing the test…

ell I totally disagree. the old SM was incredible because you could see all the coasters whizzing thru the night sky above; it was loud and exciting. they had all the stars in the sky on the ceiling and comets streaking by. you could hear the coaters roaring as you approached the main waiting area, adding to the excitement. Then as you streaked thru the ride itself you could see al the other cars and the whole inside area of SM. they ruined it with the rehab when they enclosed everything. just dark now. nothing like it used to be.
