NEW DISNEY WORLD SUMMER ITINERARY
The other day I released a new Summer Itinerary for Walt Disney World (click the image for a summary).
The new itinerary was forced by the recently released Walt Disney World June calendar.
This calendar showed a different pattern of Extra Magic Hours than in years past.
The required re-write also gave me the opportunity to reconsider a couple of things that were not as good as they could be.
The overall impact is a new summer itinerary that’s a little simpler, a little less demanding, and a little less expensive.
DETAILS OF CHANGES TO WALT DISNEY WORLD SUMMER ITINERARY
Itineraries on this site are for first-time family visitors who may never return.
As a result, they include all of the best of Walt Disney World, and even though they stretch over 8 nights, are quite demanding.
Summer visits, given the crowds, are a particular challenge, and the only sensible response is a lot of early morning visits.
In my now–obsolete version, one of the ways that I dealt with so many early mornings was to provide long afternoon nap and swim breaks, and send people back to three of the four parks late in the day during evening Extra Magic Hours to finish their visits. (The late closures of the evening Extra Magic Hours enabled longer mid-day breaks.)
The problem with this approach was always that high-season evening Extra Magic Hours crowds are so big that not much could be accomplished during theses hours. This was especially an issue at the Animal Kingdom, as a number of its best experiences only work in daylight, and are not offered after sunset.
The new June calendar makes my whole old approach not work so well. Most importantly, the Animal Kingdom is not showing evening Extra Magic Hours at all in June.
So I’ve redone the itinerary.

Key differences are as follows:
- The Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios visits are now handled without evening Extra Magic Hours
- (I keep a visit to Epcot during such hours, so that visitors can see Illuminations without having to leave the park with 40,000 other people when it ends)
- Hollywood Studios is now completed in a day and a half, giving an extra evening off
- For both these and other reasons, two sit down-meals at less-loved restaurants are now converted to counter service, and the credits used instead for Cinderella’s Royal Table, which has been converted from cash to the dining plan. The overall effect of this is less scheduling, less resulting complexity, and less cost
