MORE ON DISNEY’S WILDERNESS LODGE
Disney’s Wilderness Lodge is one of 8 official Disney owned and operated deluxe resorts at Walt Disney World.
In their recommended order for first time family visitors, they are
(Many of these also offer Disney Vacation Club (“DVC”) studios and villas, all for rent to the general public–see this for more on the Disney Vacation Club resorts. The DVC offering here is The Villas at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge.)
You enter the Wilderness Lodge into its glorious, jaw-dropping lobby–none of my photos do justice to it…
On the right you’ll find the check-in and concierge area. At Disney World, “concierge” means help with tickets, dining reservations and such.
Just down the side and extending around the corner is the gift shop.
On the opposite side of the lobby from check-in is the table-service restaurant Whispering Canyon Cafe. This is the more family-oriented of the Wilderness Lodge’s two table service restaurants, and a hoot for little kids.
The review from our book, The easy Guide to Your First Walt Disney World Visit 2016:
Further down on this same left side is the bar the Territory Lounge–one of my two or three favorite bars at Walt Disney World (it’s darker and more romantic than my image implies)…
…and beyond it, the high-end restaurant Artist Point. Artist Point is one of Disney World’s “Signature Dining” venues, require two table service credits per person on the dining plan, and has a “dressy casual” dress code. Kids are welcome, but will find it dull.
The review from The easy Guide:
…and the famous Smokey Portabello Soup.
The walkway on this side descends a ramp, and down it and around the corner you’ll find the Wilderness Lodge’s quick service location, Roaring Forks, which is very good, but can be overwhelmed at peak dining times.
Next door is an eating space…
…and you can also eat outside.
Roaring Forks is very close to the main pool at the Wilderness Lodge, which nestles between the two main wings of the building–see the map (on it the Lodge is the green-roofed shape at the top). More on the main pool is on the next page.
Close to Bay Lake is a depiction of Yellowstone’s Old Faithful, whose local name is “Fire Rock Geyser,” and which goes off on the hour.
At this end of the complex, if you go left, or north, you’ll come to the boat dock. One set of boats from here takes you to the Magic Kingdom, and another set loops among the three Bay Lake resorts–the Wilderness Lodge, Contemporary Resort, and Fort Wilderness. This makes getting to the kid-pleasing Chef Mickey’s at the Contemporary, and Hoop-Dee-Doo Revue at Fort Wilderness, quite simple.
Boats to the Contemporary always start much earlier in the morning than the Magic Kingdom boats–at 6.45a the day I shot this–so if you are going to the Magic Kingdom early, get the Contemporary boat and walk from the Contemporary to the Magic Kingdom.
Construction will see the beach, marina, walking path to Fort Wilderness, and fishing area closed in late 2015 into 2017. See this for more.
If instead you go right, you’ll find a fire pit (for evening campfires and s’mores) and a beach.
Movies are shown on the beach in the evening…
…and there’s also a playground here.
A little ways down you’ll find a place to get yourself organized for fishing, biking, etc…
…and a marina where you can rent boats for even more fun!
The resort proper ends here, but you’ll also find here the trailhead of a hiking trail from here to Fort Wilderness.

The bus stop–where you’ll find shared buses to all the parks–is at the other end of the resort, near the main entrance, between it and the nearby Villas at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge.
Also near the Villas is this second pool.
Inside the Villas is the gym, Sturdy Branches.
And then there’s the main pool.
