Review: Kidani Village at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Villas

OVERVIEW: KIDANI VILLAGE AT DISNEY’S ANIMAL KINGDOM VILLAS FOR FIRST TIME VISITORS

Kidani Village at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Villas (a Disney Vacation Club resort) is a wonderful place for returning visitors to Walt Disney World to stay.

For typical first-time visitors, I don’t recommend the Disney Vacation Club resorts. That said, these “DVC” resorts can be a great choice for first time visitors with large families, needing extra sleeping spaces, or looking for a more comfortable place to stay.

Among the Disney Vacation Club resorts, Kidani Village ranks second or third, depending on room type.

THE DISNEY VACATION CLUB RESORTS

You can have a spectacular visit at any Walt Disney World resort. However, this site recommends that typical first time visitors to Walt Disney World avoid the Disney Vacation Club resorts, while noting that these resorts are wonderful for visits after the first. (You can find extensive detail on the DVC resorts here.)

The recommendation comes from the simple fact that the distinguishing feature of these resorts–extra space and full kitchens–will not be of much value to first-time visitors following one of the itineraries on this site, as they won’t be used much.

That said, the Disney Vacation Club resorts represent more than 10% of Walt Disney World’s total rooms, and are very appropriate for first time visitors with large families, needing extra sleeping spaces, or looking for a more comfortable place to stay.

Because of this, I’m providing a series of up-to-date reviews.

KIDANI VILLAGE AT DISNEY’S ANIMAL KINGDOM VILLAS

Resorts are ranked on this site for first time visitors based first on their kid appeal, and then on their convenience.

Kidani VIllage Pool 1On this basis, Kidani Village at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Villas comes in third overall of the Disney Vacation Club resorts.

(See this for resort rankings.)

However, there’s a little variability here depending on room type and family size.  You’ll find more detail on this below, but the upshot is this:

Kid Appeal. Both of the Disney Vacation Club resorts at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge–Kidani Village and Jambo House–have stunning kid appeal based on the views of wild animals available from the balconies of rooms with savanna views, and from many public areas.

In addition, the Jambo House Villas have a jaw-dropping lobby.

Kidani Village has its own lobby.  While lovely and charming for adults, it simply does not compare to the kid impact of  Jambo house.

Convenience. Both of the Animal Kingdom Lodge DVC properties are incredibly convenient to the Animal Kingdom theme park.  (You cannot walk there, however–buses or driving are the only options.) They are distant from the other three Walt Disney World theme parks.

Just as Jambo House is more kid-appealing, it is–in general–more convenient for first-time visitors than Kidani Village. Kidani’s basic convenience problem is poor access to quick-service dining.

Kidani Village is a separate set of buildings on the Animal Kingdom Lodge campus, and does not have within it a quick service dining establishment.  Because of the architectural layout–which is designed to maximize the number of rooms with savanna views–it can be more than a mile’s walk to the quick service eatery in the main Animal Kingdom Lodge Jambo House facility.

That said, some unique room features make Kidani Village a better choice than Jambo House for some first time family visitors–see the summary above, or the details to follow.

OTHER DISTINCTIVE FEATURES OF KIDANI VILLAGE RESORT

One-Bedroom Villa Floorplan Kidani VillageKidani Village has a number of very strong positives.

  • It is one of only a few Disney Vacation Club resorts that can fit 5 people in a One-bedroom villa, or 9 into a Two-Bedroom.  (See this for more on large families, and this for more on beds and sleeping spaces at Walt Disney World resorts.)
  • Along with Jambo House, it uniquely presents savanna views of animals roaming.
  • Changes it reflects to the recent layout of the typical Disney Vacation Club villas makes it among the most livable of DVC one bedroom villas.
    • The kitchen/dining/living room area has been both widened and deepened.
    • This space has been used to add both a second full bath to One-bedroom villas, and enough living space in the living room that it can be used even if the fold-out sleeper sofa is being used.
    • (These features carry over to two bedroom villas as well.)

Compare the Kidani Village’s One-Bedroom Villa floorplan (above) with that of a similar villa at Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort and Spa (below, orange).

(Click the images to enlarge them.)

Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort One-Bedroom VillaKidani Village also has some distinctive negatives, mostly already notedits distance from theme parks other than the Animal Kingdom, and its distance from quick service dining in Jambo House.

UPDATE: KIDANI BREAKFAST COUNTER SERVICE

According to this Mouseplanet.com post, in late August 2011 Kidani Village‘s restaurant, Sanaa, began serving breakfast as a counter-service meal–the first counter service offering at Kidani.

However, since around 90% of the hotel counter service meals in this site’s itineraries are lunch or dinner, this does not affect the recommendations on this page.

BEST AND WORST ROOMS AT KIDANI VILLAGE

For those seeking an Animal Kingdom Lodge Disney Vacation Club experience, for most room types, Jambo House is a better choice than Kidani Village.

  • Studio rooms: Prefer Jambo House, because of the stunning lobby and better access to quick service dining
  • One-bedroom Villas: Prefer Kidani Village, for a much more livable floorplan, with extra size and a bath for each sleeping space
  • Two-bedroom Villas:
    • Families that can fit into two queens in one bedroom, and a king in a second, should prefer Jambo House for its lobby and dining flexibility
    • Families that need to use the sleeper sofa and/or sleeper chair in the combined living/dining/kitchen space should prefer Kidani Village for its extra size and third bath
  • Grand Villas: Prefer Jambo House for more square footage, the kid appeal of the lobby, and more convenient dining

If you do reserve Kidani Village, request a savanna view room on the third or fourth floor (these floors provides the best views).

  • If quick service dining is also an issue for you,  ask for a savanna view room near the Jambo House. Specifically, ask for a room near the Zazu elevator.  (The best of these are even numbered rooms 7338-7346 on the third floor, and 7438-7452 on the fourth floor.)
  • If quick service dining is not an issue,  request a savanna view room between the lobby and the elevator most convenient to the pool–the Rafiki elevator.  Even numbered rooms 7614-7622 on the third floor, and 7814-7820 on the fourth floor, are the best of these.

How much is the cost for 1 night at Kidani Village in Disney World?

2 Dave { 05.14.11 at 8:39 am }

Hi Hannah! The cost depends on when you go and what room type you reserve. See all the details here: http://www.mousesavers.com/animalkingdomvillas2011.html#akv4

We are travelling to WDW 10/14 – 10/19/11. I am wondering whether to rent a car for a couple of reasons. A member of our party has mobility issues, and I’m concerned we may get a villa that requires a lot of walking to get to the lobby of Kidani. Does the parking garage allow you to park reasonably close to your villa? Also, I have motion sickness issues and am concerned about riding the buses. (I’ll opt out of the rides which could be an issue for me.) In October, am I likely to be able to get seats near the front of Disney shuttles?

If we do decide to rent, how easy is it to drive and park at Disney? Does that involve more walking and other transportation issues to get to and from your car?
Do you have companies to recommend who will deliver to Animal Kingdom Lodge?

Thanks in advance! Your site is wonderful!!

Hi Leslie!

Yes, the way parking is laid out at Kidani, you can park reasonably close to the elevator bank that serves your rooms.

However, if mobility issues are a consideration–there’s hundreds of times more walking involved in the parks than the hotels…you might want to rent a scooter or wheelchair–and if you do, those are much more easily managed on the Disney buses than from a rental car.

On the motion sickness question, buses are often packed, and they have no special seating except for wheelchairs and scooters…

I find driving a car quite easy, and it adds no special mobility penalties other than the scooter/wheechair issue noted above. And I don’t have any recommendations on rental car delivery–I always get mine at the airport…

We are considering a DVC purchase. I know that space would be tight. But, in the interest of frugality, do you know if we are legally allowed to have 5 people sleep in a studio? For example, we have two adults and 3 boys above the age of 3. It would sure make the price/points more attractive to me if we could use points for a studio.

Thank you for your time.

Hiya Beth!

I can comment on the legal side–let me know if you want me to–but I’m more concerned with the practical side.

You will only be able to get 4 room keys. That means somebody is missing a key, can’t do EMH, and can’t do the dining plan. It’s a pain.

Personally I’d wait until either you can start with a bigger point purchase or until studios get a convertible chair and can sleep 5. I have heard nothing about this happening, as most are too small anyway for this–but it could work at Old Key West.

In the meantime, I’d advise getting lower price high-end rooms by getting an annual pass and using passholder discounts–see this: http://yourfirstvisit.net/2010/01/20/the-tightwads-guide-to-where-to-stay-at-walt-disney-world-3-deluxe-resort-hotels-at-rock-bottom-prices/

How far is it to walk from Animal Kingdom to have lunch at Kidani Village. We ar making reservations at Saana?…..is it worth the money and walk

8 Dave { 11.15.11 at 4:27 am }

Hi Mary, you can’t walk. (I am assuming you mean walk from the AK theme park.) You have to take a bus from the park to the Animal Kingdom Lodge, and get off at Kidani Village. Waiting for the bus, and the bus trip, will take 10-30 mins. Getting ot the bus stop will take another 125 mins or so, depending on where you are at AK when it’s time to go. Personally, I love Sanaa, but don’t think it’s worth that much time out of the park…

We are planning on taking a family trip to Disney during the second week in December. There will be 7 total (5 adults, 2 kids). Because of the size of our group, we are looking to stay in a 2 bedroom villa. According to Disneys site, there are no 2 bedroom villas at Jambo House but according to your reviews, there are 2 bedrooms available. Are they just not listed? I would rather stay there than Kidani. Thanks so much for your help!!

10 Dave { 03.27.12 at 1:20 pm }

Hi Amy! Here’s the scoop. There are two bedroom villas at Jambo House. However, they are very hard to reserve, as there aren’t many and DVC AK owners get first shot 11 months in advance. Perhaps this is why Disney does not list them here http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/resorts/animal-kingdom-villas-jambo/rates-rooms/ but does list them here: http://disneyvacationclub.disney.go.com/destinations/resorts/animal-kingdom-villas/

Thank you so much! I will definitely try to reserve the villa there! Your site is awesome and is what helped us decide when to go!

Thanks Amy!
